What is Greening Digital?

The Greening Digital initiative is a joint effort by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) to systematically track greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, and climate targets of the world's leading ICT companies.

The digital sector has a critical dual role in addressing the climate crisis: as a significant source of emissions itself, and as an enabler of decarbonisation across the broader economy. The ICT sector accounts for an estimated 2–4% of global GHG emissions — comparable to the aviation industry — and this share is growing.

By publishing transparent, comparable data, the initiative aims to drive accountability and accelerate action among digital companies toward achieving net-zero emissions.

Methodology

Data Collection

Data is collected from publicly available corporate disclosures including annual reports, sustainability reports, CDP submissions, and SEC filings.

Scope Definitions

Emissions are categorised using the GHG Protocol: Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (market-based, location-based), and Scope 3 (value chain).

Assessment Scoring

Companies are assessed on disclosure quality, absolute emissions performance, renewable energy use, and science-based target ambition.

Understanding Emissions Scopes

Scope 1Direct GHG emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company — such as fuel combustion in owned vehicles or on-site generators.
Scope 2Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, steam, or cooling. Reported as both market-based (using energy certificates) and location-based (using grid averages).
Scope 3All other indirect emissions in the company's value chain — including purchased goods, employee travel, product use, and end-of-life disposal. Often 10–20× larger than Scope 1+2.
